Suncity Group Founder Alvin Chau Sentenced to 18 Years in Prison for Gambling Crimes

The ex-head of Suncity Group, Alvin Chau, was given an 18-year prison term by the Macau Court of First Instance for a variety of charges linked to illicit gambling. In addition to his jail time, he was also ordered to reimburse the Macau government and five of the six Macau gaming licensees. In 2021, Chau and 11 other individuals were apprehended by Macau law enforcement for allegedly establishing an illicit live wagering platform in the Philippines that drew in customers from mainland China through Macau’s junket operators. After his arrest, Chau declared his resignation as chairman of Suncity and Summit Group. Shortly following his detention, Suncity completely ceased its junket operations and shifted its focus to resort development. Ultimately, Chau was charged with 229 counts of illegal gambling and 54 counts of serious fraud.
