Australian Broadcasters Under Fire for Gambling Ads During Olympics and Rugby Championship

Two prominent Australian broadcasting companies, Seven Network and Nine Network, faced criticism regarding wagering promotions. They were observed airing these advertisements during the Olympic Games and a significant rugby championship, violating Australian regulations. Essentially, broadcasting these promotions during live sporting events, particularly during family-friendly hours, is prohibited. The media regulatory body, ACMA, intervened, emphasizing the existing regulations designed to shield families and children from excessive exposure to gambling advertisements during such broadcasts. Consequently, both networks are now obligated to ensure compliance and implement revised protocols to prevent future occurrences.

Channels Seven and Nine received directives to educate their teams on responsible gambling advertisement placement, particularly during sporting events. The message was clear: it shouldn’t be happening!

Overseeing their compliance, the Australian Communications and Media Authority will be closely monitoring the situation. The networks are expected to demonstrate the implementation and effectiveness of corrective measures.

Mr. Olorin, the individual responsible for overseeing this matter, expressed his dissatisfaction. His statement conveyed that both networks had made a significant error in judgment and should have recognized the inappropriateness of broadcasting such advertisements during prominent sporting events.
