Australian Gaming Regulator Tightens Oversight Amidst Industry Scrutiny

Gaming authorities in Australia are increasing their oversight.

Following a determination that Crown Resorts was unsuitable to retain its casino license, the New South Wales gaming regulator, the Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority (ILGA), has suggested it might permit the company to commence operations at its Sydney casino by late April, contingent on the company addressing its shortcomings and adhering to a stringent set of regulations established by the authority. This decision follows a report presented by retired New South Wales Supreme Court Justice Patricia Bergin. ILGA Chair Philip Crawford emphasized that the onus is entirely on Crown Resorts to rectify its practices if it intends to recommence business. The regulatory body is obligated to collaborate with the company on the recommendations outlined in the report as per their existing agreement.

This shift toward enhanced accountability coincides with heightened scrutiny of the gaming sector in Australia. In the wake of an investigation into Crown Resorts and cautions from the NSW Crime Commission regarding potential threats to the Australian economy, Senet, an Australian firm specializing in gambling law, regulation, and compliance advisory services, has unveiled the introduction of novel compliance certifications: Senet Assure and Senet Assure Premium. These certifications aim to safeguard both gaming entities and their clientele from the risks of gambling-related harm and money laundering schemes.

“These certifications will be granted exclusively to operators who can exhibit the utmost levels of meticulousness,” elucidated Paul Newson, a regulatory and gaming specialist at Senet. “This accreditation empowers industry frontrunners to showcase their commitment to upholding the most rigorous standards of responsibility, surpassing established best practices to shield their patrons and personnel, and cultivating a workplace culture defined by compliance and social conscientiousness.”
