Australians Overwhelmingly Support Ban on Gambling Ads

A massive 70% of Australians are eager to bid farewell to gambling commercials on their televisions, as per a recent survey.

The Australia Institute, a public policy research group, surveyed over 1000 Australians about their stance on prohibiting certain advertisement categories from broadcast media. The results revealed that a mere 11% supported the continued airing of gambling promotions.

Remarkably, this sentiment remained relatively uniform across demographics, with males and females, both young and old, largely concurring that these commercials need to be removed.

This development coincides with the commencement of the footy finals, a period often accompanied by discussions regarding the appropriate level of gambling advertising, particularly during these widely viewed games. Existing regulations impose strict limitations on the timing and placement of these advertisements, but certain individuals, such as Victorian MP Zoe Daniel, believe that more stringent measures are necessary. She advocates for a comprehensive investigation into the promotional strategies employed by sports betting companies, expressing concern over the normalization of such practices.

The deluge of gaming promotions is unavoidable. Data from Nielsen reveals that in 2021 alone, the sector spent nearly 200 million in US currency on Australian advertisements. This worrisome pattern has ignited apprehension, prompting investigators to examine the pervasiveness of marketing for other detrimental goods and sectors such as cigarettes, unhealthy food, spirits, and non-renewable energy sources.
